What is going on with high bay LED Lights?
The high-bay lighting business is in the middle a major movement to LED innovation. This is driven by the falling costs of LED lights, the cleaner light they output, reduced maintenance and the impressive gains in energy efficiency. it’s true we are in a new age of led high bay lighting. Led high bay lighting applications in business and modern situations now are situated to exploit LEDs based on energy savings and minimizing downtime.
Navigant Research project worldwide sales of LED high bay lights will continue to grow for the next 5 years, coming to about $17.0 billion in sales in 2017. This is propelled principally by the rising reception rates of LED luminaires in new development and retrofits. LED technology is now cutting edge and has proven its reliability and thus gained the needed mainstream acceptance
Navigant Research also notes that LED innovations are changing our expectations of light quality in commercial lighting spaces “while minimizing contrast, diminishing glare, higher CRI and lower energy use.” Or in other words, the engineers have improved the quality of LED lights far beyond other alternatives in both light quality and efficiency. The choice to go LED High Bay is obvious.
So now that you are sold on LED High Bay Lights what to look for
1. Lumens required is the first step. How many lumens does my project need and how many luminaries do I have to get there? Currently the 10,000 to 26,000 Lumens level is the most cost competitive. Higher lumen fixtures are still fairly high priced, so using more fixtures at lower levels tends to be a better option. In a LED retrofit, starting with a lumens meter is the best plan. Turn one light on and see what it produces. From there adjust up or down.
2.Second step is Watts. Efficiency has gone way up. Where just a few years ago 80-100 lumens per watt was normal, today most fixtures are 120-130 lumens per watt. Targeting this range gives you the best mix of cost savings now and energy savings over time.
3.Third step is Fixture.Classic high bays are still the standard, but the newer LED High Bay UFO Lights styles are quickly taking over. They are called UFO, well, because they look like spaceships of course. With the new technology the LEDs can send the light down at 60/90/120 or whatever degree you need, so no need for a reflector. Sending all the light straight down also improves its usefulness. Less is lost in the reflection. Combined with less weight and high efficiencies, it’s easy to see why they are taking off in popularity.
4. Color and Lamp life. Historically most high bay lighting capped out at 4000K. This is a natural white color but still has some brown and the lights tended to get more brown and orange over time. Higher Kelvin numbers were just too harsh to us. With LEDs, the new standard is 5700K. This is a very bright white, but is easier on the eyes. Be warned that almost all commercial grade product is now 5700K and if you don’t care for this color, it’s probably a special order.
Most newer LEDs get 50,000 to 100,000 hours in them. That’s more than you will ever need, but worth making sure you are getting.
5. Certifications. There are a lot of terms to think about, but here is the quick guide. ETL is an industry respected lab.We also
DLC stands for Design lights consortium and focuses on testing for light efficiency and quality. DLC tells you how good the light is.
6. Warranty. Generally speaking, LED fixtures should have a minimum of 1 year warranty for commercial grade fixtures. They are supposed to last 10-20 years, so this should be the baseline. We have 1 years on all LED High Bay Lighting fixtures.
